Dark or Light

Dark colors tend to make the already small space of most aircraft seem even smaller. Very dark carpets and cloths tend to show lint and dust easily. Very dark colors that are used for the majority of the interior can raise cockpit temperature in warmer climates.

Light colors usually give a more open and spacious feeling, but may show wear and stains more readily. The best approach is usually a compromise. Med dark carpets hide wear and stains well, but do not show dirt and lint. If dark colors are desired, sometimes they can be used for the center portion of the seat only, so that the whole interior does not feel as dark.

Another consideration in the design of your interior is where you decide to place the materials you have selected. As a general rule, we like to put darker colors toward the floor, or under the lighter colors. For example, on the side panels, the upper part would often be a lighter color, and the lower part would be darker. We also like to repeat patterns if possible to tie different parts of the interior together. If the seats use a different color for the insert, we would usually repeat that color for the insert in the side panel and also use the trim color from the seat for the trim color on the side panel.
