Color Matching

As you begin to create the overall color layout for your aircraft, color matching will be one of the first subjects to arise. Finding colors that match can be challenging, and there are several things to consider. First, if you are going to make two objects match in color, you must decide which object will serve as the original, and which will have to duplicate the original. Some parts of your plane will have more flexibility in color selection than others. Carpet, for instance, is usually somewhat limited in color options because carpet mills do not typically run "custom" colors of carpet. Paint, on the other hand, can be custom matched to almost any color.

By selecting the color of items with fewer options first, you can avoid painting yourself into a corner. This consideration does not necessarily limit options, but simply makes the best use of the options that are available. We find that if a customer has already selected a color for part of their aircraft, and an exact match is not available for part of their interior, the closest color is usually not off by much. A relatively small difference in color hue can easily make two colors incompatible. In almost all cases the customer would have been very happy with either color, but at that point it is too late to change the first color to match the second.

Another thing to consider is that certain parts of your aircraft do not have to be the same color at all. The main thing we are trying to achieve is a color layout that includes colors and materials that compliment each other. They don't necessarily have to be exact matches. For example, consider a bright red sports car. The exterior of the car may be bright red or yellow. The interior could be the same color, but more likely it will be black, gray, or tan. These colors compliment the exterior color very well. The same thing applies to aircraft interiors. The exterior of a plane may have a white base color with burgundy on the lower half and gold accent stripes. An interior with several shades of gray would look very nice although these colors do not appear anywhere in the exterior paint scheme.
